The least of these...Los "más pequeño de mis hermanos"

I have been thinking alot about the verse, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’  Matthew 25:40 The phrase, "the least of these" has been bothering me.  It suggests a hierarchy.  If some are "the least of these" then others must be "the best of these."  Is that what Jesus meant to say?  Was He wrong?  I don't think so.  I believe He was very intentional with His words. So, who are the "least of these?"  It is clear -- the hungry, the homeless, prisoners, the despised or forgotten by society.  Therefore, the rich and powerful -- they must be the "best of these," right?   I have spent 3 years with "the least of these."  They have a profound and genuine faith.  They trust in God.  They are generous and kind.  They value relationships more than money.  They are full of joy. Jesus said, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God." (Luke 6:20)  and “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” (Matt. 20:16) Jesus loves the poor. He has always loved the poor.  He was even poor himself!  So how can they be the "least of these" for Jesus?  They aren't.  But, He knew they would be the “least of these” in this world.  And they are, indeed, the last.  The rich and powerful are clearly the “first” in this world.  What does this mean to us? How do we respond to the poor?  It’s easy.  We love them as Jesus loves them. And the rich and powerful?  They need to remember the rest of the parable: “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’   “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”  (Matt 25:44-46)  I am no longer bothered by the phrase “the least of these.” Now I understand.  They may be the least of these in this world, but in the kingdom of God?  They will be first. Lord, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Amen.

He estado pensando mucho en el versículo de Mateo 25:40: “Les aseguro que todo lo que hayan hecho en favor del más pequeño de mis hermanos, a mí me lo han hecho”.  La frase, "el más pequeño de mis hermanos" ha estado preocupandome.  Sugiere una jerarquía.  Si algunos son los "más pequeño de mis hermanos," otros podrian ser "los mas grandes” de mis hermanos," verdad?  Eso es lo que Jesús quiso decir?  Estuvo equivocado? Creo que no.  Creo que Jesús  era muy intencional con sus palabras.   Entonces, quienes son los más pequeños de mis hermanos?  Es claro - los hambrientos, los indigentes, los prisioneros, las personas olvidadas o despreciadas por la sociedad.  Por lo tanto, los ricos y los poderosos -- ellos podrian ser "los mas grandes de mis hermanos."   Verdad?  He pasado casi 3 anos con los “mas pequeño de mis hermanos."  Tienen una fe profunda y sencilla.  Tienen confianza en el Señor.  Son generosos y amables.  Valoran mas las relaciones que dinero.  Estan llenos de gozo.    Jesús  dijo tambien, "Felices ustedes los pobres, porque el reino de Dios es de ustedes." (Lucas 6:20) y  "Así, los que ahora son últimos serán los primeros, y los que ahora son primeros serán los últimos." (Mateo 20:16) Jesús  ama a los pobres.  Ya los ha amado.  El mismo era pobre!  Como pueden ser los “mas pequeño de mis hermanos" para Jesús ? No los son.  Pero, El sabia que serian los “mas pequeño” en este mundo.  Y los son. Qué significa esto para nosotros? Como respondemos a los pobres? Es facil.  Los amamos como Jesús los ama. Y los ricos y los poderosos? Necesitan recordar el resto de la parábola:  Entonces ellos contestarán: “Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos hambriento, o sediento, o como un extraño, o sin ropa, o enfermo, o en la cárcel y no te ofrecimos ayuda?”.  Y él les dirá: “Les aseguro que cuanto no hicieron en favor de estos más pequeños, tampoco conmigo lo hicieron”.  De manera que estos irán al castigo eterno; en cambio, los justos irán a la vida eterna." (Mateo 25:44-46) Ya no estoy molesto por la frase "los más pequeños."  Ahora, comprendo.  Quizas, ellos son los más pequeños en este mundo, pero en el reino de Dios?  Seran los primeros. Señor, venga tu reino, hágase tu voluntad, en la tierra como en el cielo.  Amen.
